Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Silversun Pickups, El-P, Deerhoof and Tokyo Police Club will perform at the 2007 PLUG Awards, which will be held Feb. 10 at New York's Irving Plaza. Each artist will play a 20-40 minute set at the event, which will be hosted by comedian David Cross. Malkmus will also receive PLUG's 2007 Impact Award for his "influence on independent music," according to organizers. The Jicks' appearance at the awards is their only scheduled date in the New York area as part of a tour that begins Jan. 5 in San Francisco.
Other performers secured multiple PLUG nomination this year, including Silversun Pickups with seven, Tokyo Police Club with two and Deerhoof and El-P with one each.

The former keyboard player from rock band Procol Harum today (Dec. 20) won a share of future earnings from seminal 1967 hit "A Whiter Shade of Pale," which has sold around 10 million copies worldwide. In a written ruling at London's High Court, Judge William Blackburne said Matthew Fisher should get 40 percent of the copyright of the song. Fisher argued that he wrote the organ music to the song and so was entitled to joint authorship of the track alongside lead singer Gary Brooker, who is credited with its copyright.

Chicago indie rock institution the Sea & Cake is eyeing a May release for its seventh Thrill Jockey studio album. Basic tracks were completed in a five-day session last month, and frontman Sam Prekop will spend the next week recording his vocals for the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2003's "One Bedroom."

The Black Eyed Peas aren't monkeying around on their follow-up to 2005's four million-selling "Monkey Business." Main Pea will.i.am tells Billboard.com that the quartet's next album is "almost finished" and "will come out this time next year" -- meaning the fourth quarter of 2007. At the same time, he says there's room for a lot more to happen before the group wraps things up.

The chauffeur accused of trying to extort $2 million from Yoko Ono was indicted today (Dec. 19) on a charge of first-degree attempted grand larceny and jailed without bail because the judge said he is a potential flight risk. Koral Karsan, 50, nattily dressed in a blue blazer with his hands cuffed behind him, pleaded not guilty before state Supreme Court Justice Michael Ambrecht.

Influential rock bands the Doors and the Grateful Dead will receive lifetime achievement Grammy Awards next year, along with jazz saxophone player Ornette Coleman and the late opera singer Maria Callas.Other honorees include folk singer Joan Baez, soul musicians Booker T. & the MG's, and late country music icon Bob Wills.The statuettes will be handed out during a ceremony leading up to the main Grammy Awards, which take place in Los Angeles on Feb. 11.

Some of rock'n'roll's biggest names have teamed up to sue the owner of a Web site that specializes in streaming rare concert recordings. Wolfgang's Vault offers thousands of recordings of rare audio and video performances collected over 30 years by legendary concert promoter Bill Graham, who died in 1991.Yesterday (Dec. 18), major rock names, including Grateful Dead Productions, Carlos Santana and members of Led Zeppelin and the Doors, sued the current owner, claiming it was illegally offering recordings to stimulate sales of other products. Wolfgang's Vault representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Rush is nearly finished recording its next studio album, which is expected sometime in 2007 via Atlantic. The tracks were put to tape at Allaire Studios in upstate New York with co-producer Nick Raskulinecz. "I have never enjoyed the recording process so much, nor been so satisfied with the results," drummer Neil Peart writes on his Web site.

Pearl Jam will play 13 shows in Europe in June and will not, as has been
claimed, appear at this summer's Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tenn.
The band will play six headlining shows and appear at seven festivals,
beginning June 8 in Lisbon. The trek runs through June 29 at Belgium's
Werchter Festival.
