International pop diva superstar Christina Aguilera took the stage
late Sunday night right before the ball dropped, and dropped a a bomb
of her own — her new single.
"Candyman" is the third single from her
platinum double-disc album Back to Basics and is bound to
explode once it hits radio early this year, and fans have high hopes
for the video.
Aguilera, known for being as articulate a visual artist
as she is a vocalist and musician, has promised great things for the
video - already stating in her Fall 2006 Advocate interview that inspiration would be taken from artist Alberto Vargas.
At 11:42, Aguilera made a rare television appearance to promote her
latest album, and treated the New York crowd to "Candyman," as well as
one of her old hits from Stripped, the rangey anthem
"Fighter." With her adorable golden curls and her newly signatured
ruby red lipstick, she belted out the songs better than she's ever done
on TV before, specifically "Fighter" where she nailed the high note at
the bridge that she often avoids live. Even after a hugely successful
European tour that surely put serious strain on her iconic voice, she
still showed up half of the women in the industry today.
Host Ryan Seacrest, who had stated
before the broadcast he was hoping to get a midnight kiss from
Aguilera, actually did get his wish, saying "I know you're married,
but..." and subsequently kissed her on the cheek as she giggled.
Going into 2007, with her North American tour finally beginning, and
the fresh, fun, and catchy "Candyman" finally being released after the
misstep that was "Hurt" (RCA wanted "Hurt," Christina wanted
"Candyman"), it looks like Aguilera is ready to come into the new year
with her boxing gloves on and her voice better than ever. With her
album already at 3 million sales worldwide, on mainly the success of
one single and very little promotion, the best reviews of her career,
and two more Grammy nominations to add to her three wins, she's poised
for a booming 2007.
