Lebanese-born singer/songwriter Mika's triumphant U.K. launch by
Casablanca/Universal Island became complete yesterday (Feb. 11) as his
debut album "Life in Cartoon Motion" debuted at No. 1 and the single
"Grace Kelly" started a fourth week at the summit.
The entire top three of the album chart comprised new
entries, with Bloc Party's "A Weekend in the City" (Wichita) in at No.
2, beating the No. 3 peak of its "Silent Alarm" debut in February 2005.
The opening single from the new album, "The Prayer," fell 4-11. Fall
Out Boy's "Infinity on High" (Mercury) entered at No. 3, as the single
"This Ain't a Scene, It's An Arms Race" dipped 2-4.
"Grace Kelly" kept its lead on the chart ahead of the
Kaiser Chiefs' "Ruby" (B Unique/Polydor). That was new at No. 2 on
download sales, with physical release not following until Feb. 19.
The Fray's "How To Save a Life" (Epic) continued its steady progress,
29-16-10-6, and "The Sweet Escape" (Interscope) by Gwen Stefani
featuring Akon jumped 23-10. That's one of three tracks featuring Akon
in the top 40, as "I Wanna Love You" (Universal) featuring Snoop Dogg
held at No. 9, and the former No. 1 "Smack That" featuring Eminem fell
17-24.
Four other singles climbed in the top 20, with "Lil
Star" (Virgin) by Kelis featuring Cee-Lo up 19-13, Take That's "Shine"
(Polydor) 30-17, Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Catch You"
(Fascination/Polydor) 28-18 and "Say It Right" (Geffen) by Nelly
Furtado up 37-19. Jessica Simpson scored a top 20 debut with "A Public
Affair" (Epic) at No. 20.
Elsewhere on the album chart, operatic singer
Lesley Garrett debuted at No. 11 with "When I Fall in Love" (UCJ) and
Phil Collins' Virgin compilation of late 2004, "Love Songs," re-entered
at No. 19.
On European Top 100 Albums, last week's No. 1 on the
British chart, Norah Jones' "Not Too Late" (Blue Note/Parlophone), made
a victorious debut, opening at the top of the composite chart after
amassing nine No. 1 debuts around the region. On Eurochart Hot 100
Singles, Nelly Furtado's "All Good Things (Come To An End)" is in a
second consecutive, and third aggregate, week at No. 1.
