 Turning 21 might give him more chances to be naughty, but Omarion still finished the year on Santa's nice list.
In
what was an otherwise slow week in the post-Yule music world, Omarion
scored his second straight chart-topping bow as a solo artist. For the
week ended New Year's Eve, the soulful singer made it to number one
with 21 selling 119,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures Wednesday. It was the week's only new album to make the Top 10.
Omarion
established himself as part of the R&B boy band B2K, but when the
group split a few years back, the Inglewood-born singer wasted little
time establishing a solo career.
Like 21, his debut album, O,
rocketed to the top of the charts in February 2005 (but with a more
robust 182,000 first-week copies). No B2K release ever topped the
Billboard 200, though the group's 2002 self-titled debut hit the number
two spot.
And for those keep track at home, the 21 in the title reflected his age during the recording—Omarion actually turned 22 in November.
Although last week's chart-topper, Nas' Hip-Hop Is Dead, fell three spots to four on 101,000, several other chart mainstays had big gains. Akon's Konvicted jumped eight spots to number two, the Dreamgirls soundtrack sailed 28 spots to three, Young Jeezy's The Inspiration jumped 13 to five and Eminem Presents: The Re-Up climbed 17 to seven.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Now That's What I Call Music! Vol. 23 at six, Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds at eight, Ciara's The Evolution at nine and the Hannah Montana soundtrack—slipping eight spots—at 10.
Elsewhere, Switchfoot's Oh! Gravity. opened at 18, 15 Years on Death Row entered at 100, The Family Values Tour 2006 bowed at 102, Rocky Balboa: Best of Rocky debuted at 109, The Best of N.W.A. at 143 and Matisyahu's No Place to Be placed at 146.
Meanwhile,
over on the singles chart, Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engvall's 2003
single "Redneck 12 Days of Christmas" was able to take back the number
one spot—for the sales week after Christmas.
Overall
album sales were down 55 percent from Christmas week and down 16
percent from the same week last year. Year-to-date sales in 2006
finished 5 percent below from the total sales of 2005.
